- Charlemagne died in the morning, and already in the evening he was buried. This was very strange, since the family's wish was to be buried in the suburbs of Paris. The court, however, decided otherwise. Fearing desecration by the Normans, the grave was so well hidden that its location is unknown to this day. Even some 200 years after his death, Otto III had trouble finding it. Frederick Barbarossa 15 years later also encountered similar difficulties. He was the one who brought from Vienna the reliquary in which the emperor's remains were buried.
Archaeologists are still searching for Charlemagne's burial site. It is certain that it is located within the cathedral. Almost all possible locations have already been investigated. It is now thought that it may be located in the courtyard in front of the church....
